Why Traditional Work & Performance Tools Don’t Cut It Anymore
The WPO System
Have you ever finished a day at work and still felt unsure if you actually moved forward? Like maybe you answered every message, crossed off every task, joined all the meetings but something still feels... off? Do you wonder if you did all your work well enough?
It’s not just you.
For a lot of people, work feels like a loop. You're running. Hard. But most of the time you're not sure if it's in the right direction. You’re doing more, but not necessarily growing because that spark of clarity - you know the one that tells you you’re getting better? is nowhere to be found.
And it’s not your fault. It’s the tools we’ve become used to.
We’ve dressed up work in systems and dashboards and reviews and automations. But when the dust settles, what we’re left with is often a list of tasks without meaning.
So we’re going to talk about it today, because we believe we deserve better.
The Performance Review System is Broken
Most performance management tools and systems today are a formality led by HR teams. You know it, your manager knows it, and if software had feelings, it would probably know it too.
You fill out a self-assessment. You or your manager tries to remember what you did three months ago. Your manager gives you a 3.8 based on high-level metrics or “Meets Expectations” or whatever bland label the system spits out. You both nod. And then you go back to work.
But the thing is none of it actually makes you better. For most people, if it’s positive, it just means you live to work another day. There’s no loop. No day-to-day correction. No real growth. Just bureaucracy in a digital skin.
Work tools are great at organising, useless at growth
Now, what about the other side? the ClickUps, Jira's, Asanas of the world?
Look, they’re great. They help you stay organised. You can see your tasks, assign deadlines, set priorities, and they maybe even give you a small dopamine hit when you move a task card to "Done."
But ultimately, that’s where it ends.
They don’t let you know if the task you completed was any good and they sure don’t let you know if you’re getting better at how you execute tasks over time. They don't really care about your rhythm, your consistency, or the quality of your output and that’s why we see these tools like traffic lights. They help you move, but do they really care about where you’re going? No.
What you really need
The fact is if you’re serious about your job, you need to know if you’re growing or falling. If you’re doing better at your job. If you need to make adjustments so you don’t get a bad evaluation when those HR performance review periods come around. You deserve to know that the work you put in is up to or above standards. That your skills are improving. That your effort actually translates into something meaningful.
You needs tools that:
- Tell how well you’re doing, not just what you’ve done.
- Help you reflect and optimise in the moment, not six months later.
- Show you where to improve constructively.
- Allow you adapt the way you work in real-time to get the best out of yourself.
But right now, the tools you have either only track productivity or measure performance but never both. And never in real time.
And if you’re in Africa, working in a startup, managing a remote team, or just trying to build something meaningful, you already know you can’t afford to waste time. Resources are tight. Margins are thin. Expectations are high. And most of the tools you have available weren't designed specifically for how Africans work.
You’re not even billed in your local currencies to use these tools which further shows, they weren’t designed for you, how you work and don’t truly support the demand from your company to be consistently and highly productive and performant.
So what do you do? Adapt. Improvise. Rely on your assumptions and that of your managers while having to wait months to just know how well you’re doing.
It’s not just inefficient. It’s unsustainable.
It’s time to wake up
The truth is, we need better. You deserve better.
You don’t just need a platform telling you that you completed 19 tasks this week. You need something that tells you how well you executed on those tasks. If your work threads the needle. If you’re moving in the right direction.
Because at the end of the day, work isn’t just about output. It’s about progress. And you can’t optimise progress with tools that weren’t designed to see it.
That’s why the old tools just don’t cut it anymore.
The future of work especially in Africa belongs to platforms that care about performance the way Braudit does but not just as a number on a dashboard, but as your work life unfolding everyday.
